[Review] Becoming a Legend - B. Kristin McMichael

Becoming A Legend -  B. Kristin McMichael
Becoming a Legend

I love B. so damn hard! For so many reasons, and not just because we’re both B’s.  Her writing is out of this world fantastic. I fell in love when I read her first novel To Stand Beside Her. I was enthralled with the confidence and the courage that B. Kristin showed in her debut novel. Ever since, I’m proud to say that B. Kristin McMichael is one of my top FIVE favorite authors of all time. ( I have yet to put them in order, but she’s definitely up there!) I probably have about 10 authors that I would read without questions or doubts. To make it on this list you have to not only be an extraordinary writer but generally kind, loving and personable. B. Kristin has been SO nice to me and I just love her that much more because of it. To be honest, Yes… I would totally fan girl all over her for a moment, but after that – I’m sure I’d treat her as if she was my family. THAT is what I love about authors, and especially B. Kristin.

Ok – I’m done gushing now. Well, no… I’m not. Becoming a Legend was the second book in the Blue Eyes trilogy. I ADORED the first book, and I was extremely ecstatic when I got an email from B. saying that she released the second book. Obviously I finished what I was reading and jumped right into this novel. I was enthralled to find out how well the first and second novels transitioned. Sometimes when you get to the second book, after waiting a while you need a refresher.  Not only did B. Kristin give you a refresher about what happened in the last book but she intertwined and mingled it in with the start of this so flawlessly.

Once again, the characters were perfect and even though they were of paranormal essence, they are super easy to relate to. Yet again, I was drawn in, from page one and was glued until the last. It’s impossible to read this without being emotionally invested. The feels that you get are just simply magical. I really felt like Arianna grew up a lot in this installment. Not only is she forced to deal with an incredible amount of “clan” issues and politics, but she has to deal with her conflicting emotions about her keepers. I still can’t get over the image in my head of her bond with her keepers. There are a few mentions of essences being pulled together, and all I could picture in my head was the most beautiful scene of smoke like light strands interlacing together to become one indestructible connection between the two.

Becoming a Legend is the perfect sequel. I have absolutely no complaints, except I didn’t want it to end. When I hit the last page I was like wait WHAT!?  Where’s the rest! OH GOD what HAPPENS!? I wanted to cry. But then I turned the page and got a sneak peek at the third novel (SCORE!!!) Except I’m still wanting more. I have a serious book hangover. I read another book after this, and I’m STILL thinking about the characters, and the night world that B. Kristin made and I envisioned and  I love the world created. The night humans are extraordinary.

This story is so original and beautiful. Definitely not your average vampire read. Thank the lord! Anytime I think about giving up reading paranormal cause I’m just so sick of the mainstream, I just think about this series and how it’s affected me. Because of B. Kristin, I will not give up on the paranormal romances, worlds, or characters. I know I’ve said it before, but B. Kristin is simply amazing. I love her work so freaking hard.  This book gives you everything you’d want and more in a sequel. I’m excited to see how the conclusion to this series will be, but I’m also sad to see it end.  I highly anticipate ANYTHING that B. Kristin comes out with next.  I, for sure, am a devoted fan forever. This is a must read series. Buy it, and buy it RIGHT MEOW!! You WILL love it.

[Giveaway & Review] A Night to Forget - Jessica Wood

A Night To Forget -Jessica Wood

What happens in Cancun doesn’t always stay in Cancun.

When Emma Anderson and her friends decided to spend their senior year Spring Break in Cancun, she expected some crazy memories to end their final college days. What Emma didn’t expect was to meet Brandon Fisher. Tall and sexy, with dimples that would make any girl swoon, Brandon Fisher was literally the man of Emma’s dreams. She couldn't quite believe that this stranger, who seduced her every night in her dreams, actually existed.

After serendipitously bumping into each other, Emma could not resist Brandon’s pull and spent an unforgettable night with him. Passing it off as a spring break fling, Emma never expected to see Brandon again.  But when she started her first day at her new job a few months later, there he was. The only problem was, Brandon didn’t even remember her.

MY REVIEW:

Jessica Wood’s debut novel A Night to Forget is simply stunning and original.  Jessica left me wanting so much more and yet satisified. This book kept me guessing from the first chapter to the end. Hell, I’m still guessing! I’m not saying this in a bad way either. I was completely entertained with this novel and I was completely taken in by this story. Jessica’s debut novel is very well written and I couldn’t compliment it more. To be honest, the only reason it got a 4 from me is because I thought it was a little short. I loved the story, the imagery was beautiful and the cliffhanger at the end?! Well Shit. Is it August yet!? Cause I most definitely need to know what happens… and it’s killing me that I don’t!

The characters were charming and realistic, and made you believe you were right there with them. Emma was super relatable to me being that she is such a klutz, and saying what she’s thinking out loud by accident. I loved that she had a past, but it wasn’t revealed right away. The love interest, Brandon was steamy and had that douche bag quality to him (or so you think…). Again, I tell you. GUESSING! Jessica you’re driving me crazy in a good way! Hehe. I also loved the group of girls who were the supporting characters. Especially Steph. I aspire to be someone just like her, but that will probably never happen. Steph is quirky, smart, funny, obnoxious, and knows how to party. I LOVE that in someone. Her motto – Work Hard, Play Hard.  This books witty banter was excellent and it made me feel as if I was in the conversation with the girls. A couple of times I noticed that I put my own little comments into their talks, while reading.

While this is a shorter novel, there is a lot going on. The occurrences between all the characters will keep you thinking about what’s real and what’s not real. Shit – I’m still wondering what’s real and not! I don’t want to ruin the story for you, so I’m not going to tell you what I’m talking about. HAHA! Read it for yourself. I have to say, I’m grateful for the fact that Jessica kept me guessing cause I’m one of those people who figure it out and then say I KNEW IT! Then I get that whole complex about being right, like always. Congratulations Jess. You stumped me and that’s hard to do! I do feel better knowing that it’s not a murder mystery that I couldn’t solve though. However… if she does end up writing one eventually, I’m so down for it.

Even though I bitched about it being short, I loved this book. It was fun, fast and something you will NOT forget. Not only do I want to visit Cancun to find myself a Brandon of my own (Shh. Don’t tell my husband!) and have a crazy good college time while being single… (sigh) Wait, What happens in Cancun stays in Cancun… right!? No… let me stop that thought before I get myself in trouble, haha. Anyways… This is an excellent work of art for a debut author. I’m excruciatingly waiting for the second novel to come out in August. That’s only 2 months… (SAID NO READER EVER!) I’m in agonizing pain waiting for this. 1 hour is too much for me right now! Jessica, I love you and I’m so excited for you. Now give me book 2! Seriously though, This novel definitely had the right amount of sexy, drama, laugh out loud moments, pain staking moments of tears, and just enough happily ever after. I suggest you read this RIGHT MEOW.

[Blog Tour] Come Alive - Karina Halle

Come Alive (Experiment in Terror, #7)

Title: Come Alive
Author: Karina Halle
Release date: June 23, 2013
Genre: Romantic Suspense/Horror
Age Group: General adult 17 +
Event organized by: The Book Asylum & Reading Books Like a Boss

SYNOPSIS:
It’s one thing to bring the woman you love back into your life. It’s another to try and keep her there. For Dex Foray, convincing Perry Palomino to open herself to their burgeoning relationship has been more challenging than hunting ghosts, battling demons and stalking Sasquatch combined. Add in the fact that the only way they can keep their Experiment in Terror show running is to take on a third partner in the form of the mysterious Maximus Jacobs — all while investigating a sinister voodoo sect in New Orleans — and you’ve got the perfect Southern storm and a recipe for disaster. Luckily, Dex has never been one to back down, even when his life –and heart — are on the line.

Come Alive is told from Dex’s POV.

Kait's Review

Rating:

Come Alive is the first book in the Experiment in Terror series that I had to wait to read. Part of me is sad that I didn't get to be a part of this world sooner, but a bigger part of me hates waiting so I'm glad I was a little late on this one. This is also the first full length novel in Dex's POV, which was amazing but it was also a complete journey of mind fuckery. Being in Dex's head for an entire book is exactly how I imagined it, all kinds of crazy, hilarious, sexy, and amazing.

Come Alive takes you into spooky New Orleans, where Dex and Perry travel with Maximus[insert crazy ass Dex nickname here], to film a new episode of Experiment in Terror. This book packs in the creepy, but I definitely didn't get as scared as I have before[Dead Sky Morning is still the tops]. One thing that was more present in this book was the relationship aspect. This is the first book where Dex and Perry are together, officially[ish].There's no more skankasaurus Jenn in Perry's way and things are looking up, kind of. Then, in true Karina fashion, shit goes down. That's all I can say without ruining the book. Just think: zombies and heartbreak.

Dex is as sexy, funny, and as douchey as ever. Seriously, this man can't go five minutes without thinking or saying something that had me cracking up or wanting to punch him. That is the draw of Dex though, he makes you want him and then he drives you a little mad too. I wanted to continue to hate Maximus forever, but CA definitely softened me to him. Now I just want to hug him and stroke his ginger hair. Yea... that sounds wrong, but I'm going with it.

Karina has fucked all future relationships of mine. I will never be able to find someone I can really love because they won't be Dex Foray. While I really did love being in Dex's head I think it might have been a little much for me. I found myself really missing Perry, I formed a bond with her early on in the series. Every little thing that happened had me wondering and worrying about Perry.

Every book in this series keeps getting better and better. When I started Darkhouse I had no idea how in love I would be with the characters and their world. I never expected all the twists, turns, revelations, heartache, adventure, and truly terrifying moments that EIT brings. Now I have to play the real waiting game for the next book in the series.

MEET KARINA

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she's preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Excerpt
Allison…

The voice sounded like it was coming from inside my head. But that didn’t make any sense…

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw two people standing far away from the crowd. You’ve got to be kidding. My father and a blonde woman I’d never seen before stood close together. I blinked, and they were gone.

Four guys, as tall and as built as Ethan, approached us, each with a beer and a plate of food balanced in their hands. They greeted Ethan and Jeff, and it was obvious they knew each other well.

Ethan stiffened a tiny bit and put his arm around my shoulder. Surprised, I looked up at him.

“Oh, guys. This is Allison, Nicole’s cousin. Al, these are the guys on our crew—Ted, Jack, Vinny, and Rich.”

I tried to be polite and smile, but my eyes scanned the yard, trying to track down Liam and the mystery woman.

Allison.

The soda can slipped out of my hand and crashed onto the deck, fizzing all over the legs of the men I’d just met. I dropped down onto my knees to grab the offending soda, horrified.

Snippets of past conversations regarding my mother’s behavior seeped into my mind.

Aunt Jessie’s soft, concerned tone: “She’s always so tense.”

The deep, baritone of the psychologist: “It’s paranoid schizophrenia.”

Gram talking quietly with Pop: “The voices in her head.”

Hands trembling visibly, I looked up, and my eyes locked on Liam and the blonde, who were across the yard from me. Liam looked uncomfortable; the woman just looked amused.

It wasn’t until the release of a little novel called Twilight, 8 years later, that she rediscovered her love of fiction. Soon after, her own characters began to make themselves known.
