At sixteen, Trudy Baxter is tired of her debutante mom, her deadbeat dad, and her standing reservation at the juvenile detention center. Changing her name to Trudy Sin, she cranks up her major chops as a singer and starts a band, gathering around other girls ill at ease in their own lives. Cassie Haywood, would-have-been beauty queen, was scarred in an accident in which her alcoholic mom was killed. But she can still sing and play her guitar, even though she seeks way too much relief from the pain in her body and her heart through drugs, and way too much relief from loneliness through casual sex. Still, it’s Cassie who hears former child prodigy Harumi Yokoyama playing in a punk band at a party, and enlists her, outraging Harumi’s overbearing first-generation Japanese parents. The fourth member is Esther Shealy, who joins as a drummer in order to be close to Cassie–the long-time object of her unrequited love–and Harumi, her estranged childhood friend. Together, they are Screaming Divas, and they’re quickly swept up as a local sensation. Then, just as they are about to achieve their rock-girl dreams, a tragedy strikes.

The Screaming Divas

By Suzanne Kamata

Trudy got her hands on a guitar. Actually, it was her father’s guitar, the one he’d played in his band. The instrument had a history of smoky bars, fields of wild flowers, park benches, Greyhound buses. It had been all over the place, probably even Dahomey.

She was going to ask to borrow it, but when she dropped by Jack’s apartment, he wasn’t home. Trudy decided to cart the guitar off anyhow. He never played it any more and besides, he might say no if she asked him to loan it to her. He didn’t trust her so much since all the trouble with Adam.

She’d practice and innovate and turn herself into a brilliant performer. And then she’d start a band. It would be the most exciting thing to hit the town since General Sherman. Yeah, these were good thoughts.

By day, she practiced. By night, she hung out at The Cave, playing records or slamming on the dance floor. During breaks, she looked for musicians in the Pink Room.

Hey, Maddy. I’m starting a band. Wanna join up?”

Her roommate Madeline tossed a lock of black hair out of her eyes. “You must be out of your mind.”

Trudy shrugged. She asked Jeff, the David Bowie lookalike. She even asked Johnny Fad. People laughed, blew smoke in her face. Sometimes they just turned away as if they hadn’t heard her at all.

Why did everyone treat her proposition like some sort of joke? She was as serious as she’d ever been. The more she practiced, the more she knew that her dreams lay in music. She closed her eyes and saw herself on the stage, crooning into a mike while a huge crowd lit and lofted their Bics in tribute.

When people were drinking and dancing, they weren’t in the mood for serious talk. She had to find another way to put her band together.

Trudy made a flyer with scissors and magazines and Elmer’s glue. When she was finally satisfied with her work, she rode her housemate’s rickety bicycle to Kinko’s and made a hundred copies. Then she ran around Five Points with a staple gun and plastered them to every telephone pole in sight. When she was finished, she went back to the apartment, picked up her guitar, and waited for the phone to ring.

Hey, what’s this?” Madeline barged into her room just after midnight, smelling of booze and smoke. She waved one of Trudy’s flyers in the air between them.

I’m starting a band,” Trudy said. “I told you already.”

Madeline shrugged. “Yeah, whatever. I wish you hadn’t put our phone number down, though. We’ll get half a million calls from creeps.”

Trudy didn’t answer. Why was Madeline being such a bitch? She looked really cool with her tattooed shoulder and asymmetrical haircut, but sometimes she could be totally square.

I’ll get my dad to buy us an answering machine,” Trudy said. “That way we can screen calls.”

Madeline nodded, seemingly consoled, and wandered off to her room.

Trudy giggled softly. Jack would never fork out cash for something like that, but the lie had worked.

The first call came at noon the next day.

Hey, I’m calling about the band,” a gravelly voice said.

What do you play?”

Bass, drums, whatever. I’m versatile. Hey, wait. You sound really familiar. What’s your name?”

Trudy Sin.”

Hey, I know you. You’re that firestarter.” The line went dead.

Later, Southern Bell called about an overdue phone bill. The manager at Yesterday’s, where Madeline waited tables, called asking Madeline to report to work early. Someone dialed a wrong number.

Where were all the budding musicians, the soulmates in tune with her dreams? Trudy set aside her guitar and put on some music. She threw herself on the bed and let Patti Smith comfort her.

How was she ever going to start a band?

Maybe she could go solo – set up a drum machine and play the guitar herself. She wracked her brains trying to come up with someone who’d gotten famous without back-up. Her mind went blank.

Two nights later, when she came home from a trip to the Quick Mart down the street, Madeline greeted her with, “You got a phone call. Someone wants to join your band.”

Great. Who?” She pictured a pale, black-haired guy in leather, a guitar strapped across his hard-muscled body.

I dunno. She said she’d call back.”

She? Well, okay. This could be good. A girl group. Yeah, that’s the ticket. They’d be like the Supremes with instruments. The Gogo’s with attitude. It would be a good gimmick, something to get them started while they developed as a band.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Everyone has to begin somewhere. I began my journey to becoming an author long before I published anything. Storytelling was something I did every night before bed with my father. We would create such wonderful tales together, far better than anything in books. It sprung from our imaginations. My mother ingrained a love for the written world early on. Then my grandpa gave me his first type writer when I was in elementary school. You can guess the rest.

But it was many years later, after dabbling in all the arts, that I realized writing was my greatest passion. I grew up on the far outskirts of the Metroplex of Texas, a busy world of cities within cities. It’s easy to get lost in a place like this. Some might argue that Dallas is the “New York” of the south and I might agree. Rather than worry about being a little fish in a big pond, however, I made up my mind long ago to follow my dreams. The funny thing about dreams is they have a tendency to come to life in unexpected ways.

My best friends were my twin next door neighbors. (Inspiration for the three main ladies in Silver Hollow) We made up our own little book club, complete with readings and brainstorming sessions. I loved reading to them and they loved “the story,” as we dubbed whatever project we were working on. As we grew up and went on to different careers and schools, and I tried three different universities. Needless to say, college didn’t pan out well for me. So I did the next sensible thing and decided to write “for real.”

By day I am personal assistant and simple childcare worker at the local Learning Center for preschoolers. But by night, I moonlight as an independently published author of Young/New Adult and fantasy novels. My hope is that you enjoy my books and are encouraged to follow your dreams as well.

~ Book Synopsis ~
Gemma Carlson didn’t plan on waking up married.
She also didn’t count on running into her old flame—and her son’s father-turned-country-rock star—Travis Bowers, followed by a night of drunken dares. Apparently one of those involved a ring on her finger and a vow…neither of which she intends to keep. Now with a hangover from hell, this good-girl-gone-bad knows there’s just one thing to do: run. Travis has been all over the world, but Gemma has never been far from his thoughts. So when he had the chance to catch up over a few drinks, he didn’t hesitate. Of course he didn’t expect it would lead to marriage, or a runaway bride! Travis finally has a second chance and doesn’t plan on losing Gemma again—or the son he didn’t know he had. He proposes—albeit belatedly—a date. Or rather, a few. If they can make this marriage work by starting over, he stays. If not… Gemma’s not interested; she’s got a son to protect and a heart to heal. But having Travis around could make both a little easier. Still, good girls don’t date rock stars…right?

How many glasses of champagne did I have last night? Gemma Carlson groaned, gritting her teeth against the stabbing pain that seemed to be spreading through her brain. She didn’t want to open her eyes, afraid of what she would find. Right now she was only sure of two things. One, her head hurt like a son of a bitch and two, she was very, very naked. Prying open her right eye, she tried to focus on her surroundings, but instead of seeing intricate, golden wallpaper, she found the walls were now light colored. A couch sat in the corner of the room, though her room had had a tiny office chair and desk. The landscape on the wall was new, too. She opened both eyes, blinking rapidly at the dryness, and realized she had no idea where she was. Which meant she obviously wasn’t in her hotel room. A light snore behind her caught her attention and she stiffened, turning her head slowly to look at her bedmate. She sucked in a breath at the sight of dark curls and a broad back, the only things visible above the heavy comforter. What have I done? Sitting up, she swallowed down the rolling nausea and fought the splitting headache, catching her face in her hands. And then she felt it. Something cool and metal on her finger. Something that definitely shouldn’t be there. Pulling her hands back, she stared at the large three-stone diamond ring on her left index finger and froze.

What does it feel like when you die—in those final moments? Do you feel the physical pain, or just the

pain of your regrets? What does it feel like when you realize you can’t answer these questions because

you’re not the victim?

You’re the killer.

River Daniels lives an ordinary life as a high school junior growing up in the confines of rural Texas until

her boyfriend’s brutal attack leaves her both a murderer and a fugitive. When River’s closest girlfriends

come to her aid, they make a hasty decision to not only help her, but leave their own troubled lives behind

and join in her escape.

The girls manage to elude police for months, but with every near-miss, River’s life spirals further out

of control, until she finally hits rock bottom. Realizing she must stop endangering her friends and find

evidence proving she acted in self-defense, the girls decide to make a risky move. River must face her

ugly past and the one person she was protecting the night her world caved in, the guy she has loved for

as long as she can remember.

Displaying Colette Ballard.jpgColette grew up on a dairy farm in rural Kentucky. She survived the high school experience back in the

day when Aqua Net was bought in bulk and mullets were cool. That’s also when she realized that her

constant daydreaming wasn’t a curse, but a useful skill—one she used like a lethal weapon to combat

her frustration over the haunting question: What does the alphabet have to do with math anyway?

Unfortunately, her ninja daydreaming skills only increased her desire to write—not her algebra grade.

After surviving the hairstyles and torturous math classes of her high school years, she wandered a bit—

even moving to the farthest northwestern corner of the United States, then to the farthest southeastern

corner. She finally settled in the one red-light town she started in, where she continues to live today with

her husband and three children.

Review: Love, in English by Karina Halle

18748381

Title: Love, in English
Published: 4/20/14
Author: Karina Halle
Pages: 532
Rating:

From Goodreads:
He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter. I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

MY THOUGHTS:

Karina is the queen of writing beautiful flawed characters. They become so human in those flaws that I can't help becoming emotional attached to all of them. Vera is a self proclaimed wild child that loves sex too much. (Please refrain from the slut shaming.) Mateo is the sexy older man who's marital status leaves him off limits, or so Vera thinks. When Vera joins a program teaching English to Spanish she doesn't expect to fall in love, but she finds out that love never comes at the right time.

One thing I've come to admire about Karina's writing is her lack of cheese. Things never really get unrealistically mushy. Yes, I know that most people read as an escape so relationships tend to get a little unrealistic, but I guess I prefer my escapes a little more believable. Vera and Mateo have an instant attraction, but it takes time to turn those sparks into a fire. Especially when one of those sparks is a married man. Mateo is a married man, yes. Do I agree with adultery? Hell no. As someone that has been effected by this personally I was apprehensive when I read the blurb for LiE, but I gave it a chance. I made the right choice.

[Review] Flight of Life]

Flight of Life (Essence Series #1)
So let me start off saying, I think if I were in a different frame of mind, I would have enjoyed this book much more. I wanted to read a YA book, but then when I started I guess my heart just wasn’t in it as much as I thought I would be. To be fair to the author, I wanted to state that before my review. I DID in fact like this book a lot. The characters were well built, the imagery was spectacular and E.L. flawlessly transitioned from page to page.

Calloway, which by the way I love the name – is a super relatable character who is friendly, brave, maybe a bit awkward and has the best interest at heart. He may be a little tough around the edges, but when you have to fight evil, how can you not be? I thought the tension between Calloway and Breccan (his cousin) was absolutely true to form about families. I got kinda confused between Easton and Weston until a little further in the book when they both started to differentiate from one another.

Although this is a paranormal YA novel, there is definitely an underlining tone of finding the good in people, keeping your hope, and doing the right thing. It’s an amazing message to be sent out to the Young Adult generation, and I’m grateful that the author found a way to intertwine good morals along with some science fiction to keep you entranced.

I found this novel fascinating, unique, and thought provoking. I would definitely recommend this to someone who is looking for a something different, especially among YA novels. I love how bold the story is, and it has absolutely nothing to do with Vampires, Werewolves, and the like. To be honest – the genre has become a little taxing. We’ve been so inundated with the same stories with slight differences in the character developments.  To anyone who reads Paranormal, and you’re looking for something different, I would definitely recommend this. As well as to anyone who just wants a good read. If I trusted my step-son with my kindle, I’d let him read this. He’s 10 (going on 30) and seeing as how I’ve already read this I can say it’s “mom-approved”. Maybe not for EVERY 10yr old, but I would definitely say 13+.

A great novel, that I feel guilty about giving it 3.5 stars. Honestly, I think this could deserve more from me, but again… I apparently wasn’t in the mood for YA, even though I thought I was. E.K. Blair has raw talent that I can’t wait to read again. I think maybe next time I will pick up a more adult novel by the author, though. (Does this mean I’m getting old!?)

Essentialism

Fatalism

Determinism

LK Collins is first and foremost a devoted wife and mother. She loves music and has openly admitted that she’s addicted to it. Without the strength of the words from some of her favorite artists, what she does…would not be possible. She works the normal 9 to 5 like the rest of the world, but is fortunate that she’s allowed to listen to music for eight hours a day. When she gets home, she turns into Superwoman; juggling the crazy world of being an indie author, a mom, and a wife. Both her daughter and her husband share names with famous presidents. Her husband is referred to by her readers as “the Prez”, a name well deserved.

LK has had a passion for the worlds created by authors for as long as she can remember and with the support of the Prez, she has successfully self-published three titles in the Life. Destiny. Fate Series. While her books are erotica, they are also known for dramatic storylines that will keep the reader enthralled from page one. Not to mention that while she may write a series, each is a stand-alone novel offering the reader a happily ever after. No cliffhangers for this author!
