[Waiting On Wednesday]

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking The Spine
to spotlight New and Upcoming releases that we're eagerly awaiting.

Beth's pick:
Ohhhh my god. I fell in love with the whole photograph in the book thing when I read Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children. I love the premise for this book, and am SERIOUSLY anxious about this! Just look at that cover!!!

In the Shadow of Blackbirds

In the shadow of Blackbirds - Cat Winters
Hardcover, 400 pages
Expected publication: April 2nd 2013

In 1918, the world seems on the verge of apocalypse. Americans roam the streets in gauze masks to ward off the deadly Spanish influenza, and the government ships young men to the front lines of a brutal war, creating an atmosphere of fear and confusion. Sixteen-year-old Mary Shelley Black watches as desperate mourners flock to séances and spirit photographers for comfort, but she herself has never believed in ghosts. During her bleakest moment, however, she’s forced to rethink her entire way of looking at life and death, for her first love—a boy who died in battle—returns in spirit form. But what does he want from her?

Featuring haunting archival early-twentieth-century photographs, this is a tense, romantic story set in a past that is eerily like our own time.(less)

Kait's pick:
I don't know how I feel about the whole "hate on the rich just because they're rich" thing, but this still seems like a good story. And by now you know I am obsessed with contemporaries.

The Distance Between UsThe Distance Between Us - Kasia West

Paperback, 320 pages
Expected publication: July 2nd 2013

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

  36. I've heard of In the Shadow of Blackbirds only by title and didn't know it had photographs, too, like Miss Peregrine! I'll definitely look out for that. :) (Thanks for dropping by my blog, Beth!)

The Distance Between Us sounds like it has a well-trodden plot, but I'm curious about what kind of spin the author will take to really make the story her own.

Putting both on my Goodreads watch list. :)
