[Review] Allegiant by Veronica Roth

From Goodreads:
The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

MY THOUGHTS:
Somehow I managed to escape all spoilers for this book. So, if you are worried about spoilers you won't find any here. I will keep this 100% Allegiant spoiler free. Although there are spoilers for Divergent & Insurgent.

This book was a little disappointing for me. I kept waiting for something to happen, something earth shattering(or at least shaking) because I had seen so many STRONG reactions to this book. I just wasn't getting it. Then something happened. Something that divided the lovers from the haters with a bold line that said “YOU WILL FEEL SOMETHING!”. Something that left me looking something like this for ten minutes:

You are not allowed to feel “meh” about this book. Veronica Roth will hold you hostage and make you decide whether to hate or love her for the choices she's made. I love authors without fear, and Roth definitely proved her fearlessness. On a completely random side note: I am so happy that the Divergent movie didn't come out before the final book. I hate when movies ruin the characters as I see them in my head.

I feel like Tobias became Four again to me in this book. Maybe it was being in his head, or maybe it was some of the choices he made, but there was definitely an emotional wall that I put up. Not that I dislike him, I still love him, I just didn't feel the connection anymore. My allegiance[hardy har] definitely lies with Tris through this series. In my review for Divergent I said of Tris “This begins her brave journey that will take her further than she ever expected.” Pardon my douchey self quoting, but I was so right. Tris is without a doubt one of the best female heroines in YA, ever. She's brave and selfless and she doesn't need anyone to save her. Sometimes I forget that she's only sixteen.

Some people were complaining about plot holes in the first two books, and for some reason that didn't stop me from loving both books. Pretty much all of the plot holes that I saw myself or were pointed out were explained in Allegiant. People can be nit picky and dissect every aspect of the book and come up with something but I'll just sit over here and enjoy the series.

This series has earned it's spot on my favorite bookshelf. It's one of the best dystopian YA series I've read. Allengiant left me in shock, wondering if I would recover from the ending. And as I write this almost two weeks after finishing I can tell you I am nowhere close to recovery.

  1. Well Kait, your review has left me quite intrigued! Most of the reviews I've read make me not want to read Allegiant, but yours does. Insurgent made me like Four more than Tris, so I'll be interested to see if he pulls a douchy move like Gale in Mockingjay. Excellent review!

  2. I didn't read too many reviews before reading it either and was shocked when I went back and read the reviews with so many people disliking it. It has a 2.9 rating on amazon?!? It wasn't a bad book. I think people just didn't like the ending.... glad to find someone else who didn't hate the book :) And a spoiler free review..... good job Kait
