About the Author
D.L. Roan lives and writes in her "beautifully wild and southern" home state of Florida with her "perfectly flawed hero" husband and two 80lb lap dogs.

Completely addicted to the written word, she's had a brood of characters residing inside her imagination for as long as she could remember. Being able to bring them to life and let them out to play has been a life's dream fulfilled.

Romance has always been her favored genre. While erotica is her favored spicy flavor, she also enjoys paranormal fantasy and has been known to stalk the work of certain historical romance writers.

In addition to exorcizing her characters' lusts, D.L. enjoys scuba diving, fishing, and sitting by a bonfire on a starry night. She loves to hear from her fans so check her out on Facebook or send her a tweet.

Excerpt
Grant meets Thalia

He re-covered her bare leg and reached for the top of the sheet. Ignoring her wordless protests, he peeled down the white cotton sheet, sparing only a quick glance at her plump, bare breasts as he examined the cut over her ribs. “The good news is the swelling above your eye has gone down enough so that you no longer look like a science fiction experiment. The bad news is your leg is infected. You need a doctor.”

“No. No doctors. I can…”

Yeah, I figured as much.” Grant watched her struggle against her bonds. She froze when he pressed his hand to her bare chest. “I said relax. Do you want me to untie you?”
Her eyes darted up to the cord around her wrists in another wordless plea. “Well, see, I only have one problem with that.” Grant smirked and pointed to the cut on his cheekbone.

“Seems you have one hell of a right hook.”

At least she had the decency to look contrite as she studied his face. He knew it was an act. She would fight balls to the wall as soon as he released her. He counted on it, in fact. “That’s okay, I don’t need an apology. I know you didn’t mean it. You were pretty out of it last night.” He reached for the knot above her head but stilled, searching out her gaze. “You won’t do it again, will you?”

He almost laughed at the puppy dog eyes she gave him as she silently shook her head. Well, here goes the neighborhood. He took a little longer than necessary to work the knot free, watching as her muscles bunched and coiled. He could almost feel the energy rolling off her body as she prepared to strike. It was one of the things he missed about his job. Reading the people he was hunting, feeling the energy around him shift and move as the final fatal scene unfolded.

One last tug and the cord fell free. She pulled her hands down to her chest and calmly worked at the strands until they slid from her wrists. Almost teasingly, Grant shifted and turned his back to her. She certainly didn’t disappoint. Striking like a cobra, she jackknifed from the mattress, looping the cord over his head and wrapping it around his throat.

With a knee in his back, she pulled hard against the cord. Grant had to admit, he’d underestimated her strength a bit. The hand he’d slipped between his neck and the cord began to lose feeling as the cord cut into his palm. He was beginning to think twice about playing games with this chick. With a twist and a shove he was out of her snare and had his hands wrapped around both her wrists. He dodged her knee as she shoved it at his groin, but he couldn’t hold back the curse when she bit down on the back of his hand.

“Goddammit!” She was like a damn fossa mongoose; lean, mean, and quick as hell! Grunted curses filled the air as he hoisted her from the cot and then pushed her back into the mattress. No more games with the rabid carnivore. Her arms pinned beside her head, he straddled her hips and hooked his ankles over her shins to keep her from kneeing him in the back. “Enough,” he growled as he hovered above her.

Her nostrils flared as she dragged in a series of frantic breaths. Her skin, which had been so pale and gray, was now flushed pink with excitement. He watched as her silver eyes flared with heat, her pupils dilating to encompass the hypnotizing swirls of gray. Grant was astonished. Every misconception he’d had of her being a broken victim flew right out the window. Christ, she was playing him. And she was enjoying it every bit as much as he was.
His cock, hard and aching, pressed against her pelvis as the heat from her naked body washed over him. He was suddenly aware of her bare breasts pressed against his chest and found himself wishing he’d decided to go shirtless that morning. Her pink lips parted, her warm breath washing over him as their eyes locked. He fought hard against the need to kiss those lips, to slide his tongue into her hot, wet mouth and devour the taste of pure wildness that radiated from her soul. She didn’t need a snare to capture him. He felt himself being drawn in like a bee to an exotic wildflower.

His body warred with his mind as his head dipped a fraction closer. His instincts screamed for him to back away from the edge of the cliff. He knew what she was doing. It wouldn’t work, but damn if he wasn’t tempted to call her bluff.

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).
Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently splits her time between her apartment in downtown Vancouver and her sailboat, where a book and a bottle of wine are always at hand. She’s hard at work on her next novel.

From Goodreads:

The Faster They Live, the Harder They Fall . . .
Raised by con artists, Ellie Watt has a lot of crazy childhood memories-but none crazier than being scarred with acid by the demented crime boss Travis Raines. Now Ellie is a full-grown woman who lives for revenge, and Travis is a full-blown drug lord who kills for pleasure. The sadistic bastard has kidnapped her good friend Gus as well as her mother, whom he's been holding as prized possessions in his heavily guarded lair. And Ellie has only one chance in hell of getting them out alive-using two dangerous men who love her to death . . .

One is Camden McQueen, a talented tattoo artist who's made a permanent mark on Ellie's heart. The other is Javier Bernal, her fiery ex-lover who's busted more than a few heads in his time. From the crime-ridden streets of Mexico City to the predatory jungles of Honduras, this unlikely trio forms an uneasy alliance in the deadliest game of all-a gun-blazing battle to the finish that will pit enemy against enemy and lover against lover. And Ellie must choose the right man to trust . . . or die.

MY THOUGHTS

This review does not have any Bold Tricks spoilers, but may have slight spoilers for Sins & Needles and Shooting Scars.

I think that by now my love for Karina Halle has been made perfectly clear. I've been super burnt out lately, on reading/blogging/life-ing, and I haven't found the want to read much of anything. Then Bold Tricks came out and I forgot all about any kind of slump I've been in and rushed to get back to Ellie's story. At then end of Shooting Scars I was left with a feeling of “what the fuck?”. I liked the ending, it was definitely unpredictable, but it left me with anxiety about what would happen next.

“My real nature, my real self, wanted that person to believe in me, to see the good, ignore the bad, and make me feel like I had a future.”

The book picks up where the last left off so there was a fast paced opening that hooked me instantly. The story never slows or falters, and there were many moments where the twists had me picking my chin up off the floor. The character evolution is amazing. Ellie, Camden, and Javier had all changed in different ways and Bold Tricks really highlights who they are at the core.

“It wasn't that I couldn't go back to being me-I was never very good to begin with – but if we'd both changed, could we find each other again as we did before?”

In Bold Tricks Ellie is battling to stay alive in the jungle, but she is also battling herself and the guilt from her past decisions. Ellie has never felt like a good person, or like she was someone who deserved real love, but she still fights for everything she wants. She let her past determine the way she was living, scamming people and never caring about anyone except herself and vengeance. I really love Ellie because she's not one of those good girls I've gotten sick of reading about, she's a bad ass who needs a little redemption. Ellie started out looking for a quick payday, but ended up taking a long look at herself, who she was, and who she wants to be.

“At least I can see you clearly. The things up close. The things that matter.”

Camden McQueen is a tall, tatted, glasses-wearing, sex god with a heart of gold. Oh, and he's also something like a crazy badass when it comes to the people he loves. I think Camden went through the most change. He really realized what he was capable of, and I think that really helped him relate to Ellie a little more. Camden was the wild card for me. I didn't know what he was going to do after everything that he went through.

“You're the only one who gave me a soul. If I don't have one anymore, it's not my fault.”

Javier almost blinded me. I admit, I was all about him after reading On Every Street, but I slowly came out of my Javi-coma. There is something special about Javier. Something that made me want to love him, despite everything he has done. I don't think Javier is a character that can ever be truly understood. He's all gray area and unpredictability. I thought Javier's major weakness was Ellie, but I realized that his real weakness is his need for power.

All the anxiety I had before starting this book was for no reason. The characters never felt phoney or typical, and neither did the story. Karina delivered[as she always does] with the final installment in this series.

[Review] Very Bad Things

Very Bad Things (Briarcrest Academy, #1)

“Bad decisions can make some good damn memories”

“Even after all that has happened to me, I’ve never give up wishing on stars”

“Fuck you perfectionism. Without you, I am brilliant.”

I wanted to read this book so hard core. I absolutely loved the synopsis, and I was in desperate need of a standalone novel. Very Bad Things did not disappoint me. Obviously, there were major contributions to me wanting to read it. With tragedy, sexual tension, angst, tattoos, humor, and love, I immediately had to get my hands on it. Not to mention the cover is absolutely gorgeous.  This story is definitely one about fighting for what you believe in and being passionate in everything you do.

The main character Nora, is the definition of a perfect child. Never doing anything wrong, and just.. well perfect. Until she finally reaches the limit of being so fed up. Determined to be the best at being the worst now, Nora starts out with a bang. Instead of giving her drawn out speech at her school function, she decides instead to tell everyone to Fuck Off. When I read that all I could do was smile because how awesome is that?! I mean really. I was amused on so many levels due to this.

While all the students families are there, everyone hears her… including Leo Tate. From the moment Leo lays eyes on Nora he has an instant attraction, but knowing the age difference refuses to do anything about it. Leo is the definition of sexy. Strong, tattooed, yeah, I lost my train of thought… but of course, he’s a playboy.

Then there is Sebastion. Oh how I love that name. I think that to have the name Sebastion you have to be a certain kind of person or character. This character fit his name to the tee. While completely adorable, he had the protectiveness and the foresight to see the reality of situations. I absolutely adored his character, and Ilsa – if you read this… A book about Sebastion would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Even though he wasn’t the main character – he was definitely my favorite.  He was an amazing support character along with Nora’s best friend.

Once Nora convinces herself that Leo and her were soul mates, there was no going back for her. Even after she pulled some stupid shit and ended up on his bad side. Her determination was unrelenting and the fact that Leo couldn’t get over the age difference between them was a tad annoying at times. I’m a firm believer in if it’s meant to be, then just let it happen. You don’t choose who you love. You just love. The heart should never be distrusted, as well as the brain needs to be listened to.  Seeing the characters go back and forth was hard at times because you didn’t know who to side with. Was Nora really being immature or was Leo just being ridiculous? At times I think it was a mixture of both.

I will say that I COULD have devoured this book in one sitting, but I didn’t. The story definitely has its ups and downs, and really makes you need to know what happens between the two lovers. Will it? Won’t it? Gahh! I need to know! I really didn’t like how the publisher put it quite a large amount of previews for other books at the end, either. I thought I had about 15% left of the book to find out what was going to happen, but I didn’t. Very deceiving and I don’t appreciate that! *evil dagger stare* This also makes me feel bad for the author, because I’m sure other readers weren’t happy about this either.  But, I really do recommend that you go out and read this right meow! This book definitely delivers, and is well worth it. I’m totally a new fan of Ilsa Madden Miles now. I anxiously await her next novel, and I hope it’s about Sebastion!! Hehe.

[Review] Losing Hope

Losing Hope (Hopeless, #2)

“I wonder if it's possible for people to fall in love with a person one characteristic at a time, or if you fall for the entire person at once.”

“I let everything I’m seeing sink in because this is what I want to remember the most. I want to remember exactly what she looks like the second she hands over a piece of her heart.”

I’ve been trying to review this book for over a week now. Without any progress, I’m now forcing myself to just write. When it comes to Colleen Hoover books, it’s so hard to prepare yourself mentally for the amount of feelings that you want to put into your review. I want to reciprocate EVERY moment that meant something to me that I’ve read in her books, in my review. It’s impossible to tell you how much I felt while reading this. I’m just going to say, I think I cried for the first 9 chapters, continuously. I loved Hopeless with such ferocity and I’m SO happy that I got an email from Netgalley for Losing Hope. There aren’t enough words to describe Colleen Hoover’s writing. Well, obviously besides the words Obviously. A. Fucking. Genius. [in a sentence, of course].

I honestly think that I am more in love with Dean Holder now, than I was in Hopeless. I really enjoyed the fact that this was in Holders perspective. I didn’t know what to expect when I first started reading Losing Hope. The only way I can describe this book, is It’s How can a book be so painstakingly DIFFERENT yet it’s EXACTLY the same. Once you read both books, you’ll understand. I completely fell in love with the characters again and everything in between. The in depth look that you get into Holder… leaves you speechless. Learning so much about his backstory and why he is the way he is just KILLS YOU.

I literally lived for those letters to Les. I couldn’t even deal. Les brings a whole new level to the story of Holder & Sky. Not to mention Daniel. Fucking Daniel… while I’m crying my eyes out over the events that are transpiring… Daniel comes in and makes me giggle to no extent. He is completely a hot mess who is passionate, random, caring, sarcastic and witty aka… The PERFECT sense of humor. I want him as my best friend. There is something to be said about people who can leave, and then when they come back… you pick up right where you left off. As if time hasn’t even passed. No matter how long the distance, or how large the amount of time – nothing changes. [Yes Kait, that comment is totally meant for you. Face it. You’re my best soul sister, forever.]

Can I just say that it’s impossible to JUST read a Colleen Hoover book? You can’t. You are 100% in the book. Feels. Feels. Feels. I was devastated. I was in love. I dreamt. This is the ultimate perfection of a second novel. I’ve never felt like a story has been more complete than now. Hopeless was an unfinished puzzle. Losing Hope, was the missing pieces. I understand so much better. What you think you know, is just the surface. Reading Hopeless does give you an advantage of the plot twists…. But it still doesn’t prepare you for the emotions of going through it with another perspective. Just when you think you know what’s coming, it’s like “Oh, ok.. so this is going to happen” NO! It’s so much more. Like I said before. NOTHING like Hopeless, but EXACTLY the same

You don’t HAVE to read Hopeless before you read Losing Hope, but I recommend it. However, I do plan on re-reading this series at some point… and reading Losing Hope before reading Hopeless, just so I can experience the whole thing again, through yet another perspective! Colleen I want to hug you and never let you go. [in a non-tie you to your chair in a basement way]. If you haven’t picked up this book, You need to. RIGHT MEOW. And if you have picked it up… you better yell at those who haven’t picked it up yet, now that it’s available!

[Review] Heaven's Sinners

Heaven's Sinners (The MC Sinners, #2)

I started reading this almost right after Hell’s Knights. I instantly became a fan of Bella Jewel after I read her first novel.  As you know I’m not really a “biker” fan. However – this book really put it into perspective about biker gangs. After giving the first novel of this series a try and loving it, I knew right away that I had to read this one too. I absolutely loved the storyline and the characters and was completely sated that the characters from the first book made appearances in this novel.  You don’t necessarily have to read Hell’s Knights first, but I would recommend it.

In the first book, you meet the main characters of Heaven’s Sinners. Spike and Ciara have an extremely troubled past and I wondered how that was going to play out in this novel. I was pleasantly surprised by the occurrences that happened and the way everything brought itself to fruition. Once again Bella Jewel brought stunning imagery and in depth characters to life. The sexual tension in this novel is beyond crazy and definitely makes you begging for more with anticipation.

I absolutely loved all the fighting and non-stop bickering between Ciara and Spike. I love some comedic banter in a story and this definitely gives you plenty. Of course, witty banter in a story and tension between two characters usually leads to some incredible sex… and then I wonder why I love witty banter? Nah, I know I’m a sucker for an intense sex scene!
The characters both had extremely admirable traits to them. Ciara was stubborn and refused to give up on Spike (Danny) and even if it took her last breath she maintained that she would fix things between the two of them. Spike on the other hand, was so caught up in what happened in the past that he didn’t want to drag Ciara into his mess, let alone admit the feelings that he truly had. Even though he was completely against Ciara, he would do anything and everything he possibly could to keep her safe. Again, I loved that Addison and Cade were still in the story as well as Jackson. The friendships that are built between the four characters is unbreakable, and albeit at times – unwanted.

This book is totally sexy with new fetishes, sexual tension, teasing, retaliation, humor, tragedy and love. So I guess I’d like to say that this book has a little bit of everything. Even if you don’t like a “biker” setting or erotica, I would still recommend this book.  Bella Jewel has completely changed my mind about the biker label.  I mean really it’s only a different type of family. I can’t wait for the 3rd installment in this series to come out, (Jackson’s story).  Great read, and definitely recommend this.

[Release Day Blitz] My Today

Release Day Blitz!!! My Today My Way Series, Book Two by: HJ Bellus

Release Day Blitz!!!

My Today
My Way Series,
Book Two
by: HJ Bellus

Synopsis:
Lacey’s Story…

Covering up pain is easy. It’s keeping it tucked away that’s hard. I’ve always needed the cover of tattoos to hide the nasty past that leached its way into me, tainting me beneath my skin. Not the shiny, trendy tats, but the ugly broken kind, meant to keep the world at bay. If they weren’t enough, then my piercings, foul mouth and crazy hair usually did the trick. Life had taught me to never follow the rules, because when you do, you get burned.
That philosophy served its purpose, until I met someone who turned my life upside down. Milly, the little hoochie, stormed into my life and changed everything with her undying faith in me, her love and her shitty coffee concoctions. I found a family in Milly, and her sexy farm boy, Cree. She accepted me without hesitation, and never ran from the dark and dangerous secrets that I harbored. My new family loved me unconditionally, with their showers of sprinkles and impromptu dance parties.
My life was perfectly imperfect until Tripp and his crazy-ass ideas of princesses. Our relationship is what most would describe as fuel meeting fire. We were both hell bent on burning each other to the ground. Tripp, fresh out of rehab, moved in with Milly and Cree to try and make a new life for himself. Tripp, the sexy as hell, charismatic beast, soon became one of my best friends. We shared our love of ice cream and tattoos as we blazed our own path that could only lead to a beautiful train wreck. The only question left is, will we set the countryside ablaze with our hot tempers and foul mouths, or will we paint our own happy ending filled with all the gushy shit normal people crave?

Excerpts

Excerpt #1

I always thought I would end up with Candice. She was the girl everyone wanted to be with and I was her best friend. Sure, we were boyfriend-girlfriend in elementary school; but by fifth grade, we had become just friends. Good friends. That’s when she introduced me to Reese. Reese was this shy little girl. She’s still shy, if you didn’t know her; and I suppose that is why I didn’t think things would happen as fast as they did between her and Josh.
Anyway, the day Candice had made me promise to never date Reese, she also kissed me.
It was one day last summer, she and Reese had one of their fights and Candice asked me to go with her to Black Bridge.
“Come on, Ty, there’s a train coming. Let’s hide by the track.” Candice’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “It’s the best rush, come on.”
I’d never been able to say no to Candice. After grabbing my shirt, we crawled up the levee and headed down to the train tracks.
The rusted metal bridge had braces every four feet, creating the perfect niche for teenagers looking for an adrenaline rush to hide. “Let’s duck down into this first niche,” I suggested.
“No way. To get the full effect, you have to be in the middle.” She pulled me along behind her to the center of the bridge. Smiling, she ducked down into the alcove.
I pushed back against the bridge wall and stared at the graffiti on the other side. The newest was a funny fish with sharp teeth, signed SPAZ. Everyone left their signature, here. Whether it was a gang sign, like F-14 for the Fresno County Dogs, or just a name and date, it was immortalized in spray paint for all to see.
I leaned forward looking left and right for the train that Candice swore she heard. It was coming from the south and I heard it before I felt the vibrations or saw it. I hoped it would be an Amtrak. They were shorter. I took in a lung full of air, wiping my sweaty palms on my shorts to hide my shaking.
Watching Candice chew her upper lip and search the track, I knew this was her first time.  Screeching metal on metal and the whirl of the train’s engine had her clutching my hand. My heart raced in panic, my chest tightening.
Burying her head in my shoulder, Candice said, “Hold me, I hate trains.”
Candice had always been one to do overly stupid things—things that scared her, things that made absolutely no sense, just to seem brave. I never completely understood it.
A Thunderous roar filled my ears as screeching metal grated on my every nerve. Each one of them was alive and pulsing in rhythm with the train. I opened my eyes to catch the tail end of the train pass by. Thank goodness, it was an Amtrak. My shoulder was sore where Candice had dug her nails in deep.
“Candice, we’re safe. Open your eyes.” I lifted her head, my finger on her chin. That was when Candice kissed me. I expected it to send my head reeling and my heart pounding, but it never happened. I didn’t feel a thing.
“Thanks for keeping me safe.”
She quickly jumped up and trotted down the tracks, heading home. Kissing her had proven to me there were no longer any feelings other than friendship.
As we headed home, Candice grabbed my hand, stopping not far from her house. “I need to ask you something.” Her big hazel eyes searched mine as I nodded and waited for her to continue.
“I need you to promise me two things.”
“What?” My brows pinched together in concern. I never knew what to expect from Candice.
“Promise me you won’t tell Reese about our kiss, today,” she pleaded, dropping my hand and holding hers together in front of her as if praying.
Nodding, I said, “What else?”
“We’re best friends. The three of us. I think that.” She let out a long sigh and I rolled my eyes.
This was not new news. We’ve all been friends for quite a while, now. What was she getting at? “And?”
“And I think it’s best if we promise to never date each other and you promise me you’ll never date Reese.” She paused and I didn’t react or comment. If she didn’t want to date me, then why did she just kiss me? We’re sophomores in high school, I don’t play little kid games. Crossing my arms over my chest, I waited for her to continue. She quickly spat out the rest of her reasoning.  “I need both of you. Neither of you realize how much I’m going to need you this next year. And if you date, and I know you like her”—
My eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Huh?”
“I know you like her. I see the way you look at her. Watch her. I just need to know that you won’t date her this year. Not yet. In case, if you break up and never speak to each other again. I need you. I need you, both.”
“It’s that important to you?”
Candice nodded. “It is.”
“Why?”
Shaking her head she answered, “It just is. Please Ty, please promise me.” Candice blinked away the tears in her eyes and I wondered what had her so worried.
“I promise.”

Excerpt #3

“Can you believe what a slut Reese is?” The short blonde asked, loudly.
“Right? Who has sex in the orchard when there’s a party going on?”
I clenched my fists, ready to slam them into their faces. I spun toward them, slamming my locker shut. “Listen here” I looked out at the crowd of students scattered throughout the hall. “It’s none of your damn business what happened with Reese after the Formal. Or Candice either, for that matter. The next person I hear talk shit about either of my friends, I will personally kick”—
“Titus, that’s enough.” Mr. Gustin came over and stood next to me. He turned to the rest of the students. “All rumors will stop. Immediately. The events that happened over the weekend are no one’s business. The next student I hear talking about it, will be suspended.” He looked around to everyone. “Any questions?”
Most everyone mumbled no or shook their heads, Josh was the exception. “Since I was involved, that means I can talk about it all I want.” He laughed. The ass laughed. I lunged forward, ready to punch his damn face again, when Mr. Gustin clasped my shoulder and steered me toward his office.  Mr. Gustin opened his door and motioned for me to go in.

About the Author

I'm a wife and mother of four. I have been writing for as long as I can remember. I use to write fairy tales when I was in grade school, but now I love writing about those tough high school years and how one decision can change the course of your life. Friendships, first loves and over coming the odds all interest me.

Three years ago, I decided life was too short to waste my stories by letting them collect dust on my shelves. I researched querying, took a few writing workshops and wrote the whole time. I first ventured away from what I normally wrote and tried a Paranormal Romance. That novel is tucked safely away. A year ago I chose to go back to my roots and write what I love - friendships, love and choices - how speaking out can save a life, maybe yours or a friends.

I talked to other authors and made wonderful friends. That's when I learned about self-publishing. I'm glad I followed through. I was so nervous to hit publish, but now I am grateful for the encouragement. It was the best decision I've ever made.

I'm usually in front of my laptop. When I'm not writing I am either trying to catch up on a weeks worth of laundry or on Facebook. I am a huge procrastinator. Usually close to a deadline, you can find me actually cleaning house just so I don't have to hit send. I think sending my books out to betas and my editor is the second scariest thing in the world. I love Rockstars and PB&J sandwiches. (Not the healthiest I know but it’s the fastest and it tastes good.)
